It’s bad enough that, everywhere we go, Los Angelenos have to pay to park. But now we’re paying over $4 a gallon just to get to the parking meter.

Across the U.S, gas prices have increased about a dollar from last year, bringing the national average to $3.74 a gallon. A AAA survey shows that one million less people will be driving to their Independence Day vacation destinations. And overall, one million more Americans will be staying home for the three-day weekend.

Lucky for us, we live in one of the most amazing regions of the world, and there are plenty of places to enjoy our July 4th weekends right here in SoCal.

Malibu: If you don’t have time to get a hotel, just stay a day in Malibu, enjoying the bright blue waters and gorgeous hills. A picnic on the rocks near the beach is an affordable but relaxing way to spend the afternoon. Then watch the sunset from the Malibu Pier while sipping on a piña colada. Nothing sums up a vacation better than a drink on the beach while the sun goes down.

Santa Barbara: It’s a little further of a drive for Los Angelenos, but it’s totally worth it. Not only do you have tremendous beaches, there’s plenty to do in the city itself. If you’re a nature person, go for a horseback ride or a whale watching tour. Then tear it up at night in Old Town Santa Barbara’s State Street. Here’s a tip: Joe’s Café makes some strong cocktails.

Laguna Beach: There’s always something to do in Laguna Beach. Between the kitschy old stores, chocolate shops and art galleries, it’s the perfect staycation destination. You can also get a workout by hiking up El Moro Trails along the beach. Not only will you encounter some interesting wildlife, you’ll get beautiful views of the crystal clear water.

Palm Springs: Just because it’s SoCal doesn’t mean you have to spend all your time at the beach. You can relax poolside, too. Palm Beach boasts lush golf courses and thousands of lavish hotels with equally beautiful pools.

San Diego: Visit the second largest California city and enjoy the fireworks on San Diego’s July 4th Dinner Cruise.  It includes champagne, a three-course gourmet dinner and live music.
