It’s almost summer, which means it’s time to burn off all the calories you’ve been shoving in your face since the holidays. We’re not looking forward to it, either.
As you adjust your diet, you’re probably planning on picking up some healthy snacks to help you get through the day. But beware—there are a lot of foods out there you might think are healthy, but they’re actually not going to do much for you in the diet department. Check out these 8 foods you probably think are healthy, but aren’t.
Granola Bars: Granola bars have nuts, seeds, and fruit—all of which are great. But it’s the sugary glue that holds all of that together that’s bad for you.
Frozen Yogurt: Unless it’s explicitly labeled fat-free, many frozen yogurts contain just about the same amount of fat as a reduced-fat ice cream. Same amount of calories, too.
Tea Drinks: Brewing your own tea leaves are one thing. But the bottled tea drinks have a ton of added sugar, sometimes even more than soda.
Pretzels: They’re basically empty calories. And one serving has nearly a quarter of the sodium a person needs each day.
Sandwiches: Don’t let the advertising fool you—unless you make your own, sandwiches are usually filled with sugary sauces and have very little vegetables and protein in them.
Sports Drinks: While they tout that they’ll help you restore your electrolytes, most sports drinks are actually just sugar water. Some of them contain up to 30g of sugar per serving.
Frozen Meals: Those “light” or “healthy” frozen meals are usually highly processed and filled with sugar and sodium.
Rice Cakes: Rice cakes have a reputation for being the go-to snack for healthy eating. But they’re mostly just calories and sodium. Even the whole grain rice cakes usually remove the part of the whole grain kernel that contains the most nutrition.
